Scan for codes you really can't check timing even with a light. If you think you have a problem scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge, auto parts rent it.

Thank you! I checked the codes. The only one that came up was P1121. The reason I thought it might be the timing was. When I looked at the timing gears, the marks didn't match.

Was it at TDC if not of course they won't match if not. The code you have is a tps sensor code so before you change anything try cleaning throttle plate on both sides and iac hole with choke cleaner then reset it and see if it comes back.

Wow! That was very helpful. Thank you!

I have a follow-up question to your answer. How do I check if it's TDC? The engine isn't running. Would I need some kind of compression tool? What is the easiest way to check that?

If th battery was disconnected reset the security system if no manual look online anytime a battery is disconnected/replaced you can run into that. See pic I am assuming it's a 3.0 or 3.5L you didn't put model of sorento or engine size. If belt has slipped it probably bent valves as it's an interference engine

It is a 3.5l. Sorry about the lack of information. I have heard about the interference engine. That stinks! Would a code reader let me know if it was out of time? I will check the security system as well.
Is the only way to check for bent valves is to take off the head? I assume?

I am so sorry. I hope you don't think I'm completely dumb. When you say security system. Are you referring to an alarm system or a diagnostic system reset. Because my vehicle doesn't have an alarm system.

It's called anti theft and most cars built after 98 have them. They won't let the car start by shutting fuel and or spark off or both. See pic

Would that still be the case if I don't have a 'keyless' entry? I purchased the Sorento from an individual and it didn't have a keyless remote.

Really suggest that you take this to a garage and have it properly diagnosed. It seems above your ability. I have no further comments or suggestions.
