My 2004 Ford Ranger truck has a loud squeaking noise when going over bumps, etc. (like the sound a spring on a mattress would make). Any ideas? I am a single woman with no one to ask, and thus, I want to make sure when I take it to be repaired that they are telling me the truth.

So, is it safe to drive until I can get it replaced if that is indeed what the problem is? My neighbor is a shade tree mechanic (a pretty good one) - is this something he can do in his driveway fairly easy (he has rebuilt and replaced engines in his driveway)? He might offer, and I just need direction. I sincerely appreciate your help.
