Help with a Dodge Intrepid

I have a 2004 dodge intrepid yesterday my husband was driving it and out of no where going down the rd the car made a strange noise and put out a huge puff of smoke we could not see the cars behind us then it was running fine again about an hr later it did the exact same thing and again it has been running fine ever since what could the problem be?
