I had the check engine light come on and was told that the code came up as p0420. He told me that it is a problem with the catalyic converter and that it would have to be replaced.

could other things cause this error? If i replaced the converter then how much should it cost?

yes this is catalytic converter code but it could be something else besides that. converter costs vary depending on where you are but i would assume in the range of $500. but check for a coolantleak as this cold cause the converter to give that code or one of the O2 sensors not working correctly.
