look around for any hoses off while running or listen for a whistling noise.
the iac motor, if bad, is about 140 and 1 hour in labor.
lets try to find the failure first.

I will be able to check this tonight when I get home from work. I work about 50 miles from home. Is it save to drive on the highway? What if there is a whistling noise? What if there isn't?

if it whistles, then there is a vacuum leak. if it does not, then there is something else wrong.
