Car was running fine all day, started it and it made a knocking sound. Checked oil and there was no oil in it, oil and filter had been changed about a month ago. Engine light came on, ran my scanner and got code P1345. Put oil in, ran scanner again got P0014 and P1345. Cleared codes and only have P1345 code now.

Hi,

The P0014 indicates a camshaft phaser issue. In this case, it was likely due to the oil issue. The P1345 is a variation in the camshaft and crankshaft timing. This could have been caused if the phaser was damaged. Does the engine still make a knocking noise? How long did it take for this code to return?

Take a look below. I attached the diagnostics for the P1345. Read through them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Take care,

Joe

The knocking was almost completely gone after I put oil in it but last I checked, it’s still there. After resetting the engine light, the P1345 code came back immediately. I was changing the VVT solenoid but it’s stuck and still haven’t gotten it removed.

Hi,

Is the part you are replacing what I attached below? If so, do you mean it won't pull out of its mounting location?

If that is the case, spray it down good with a penetrating fluid and let it sit. Then, heat it with a torch. Allow the penetrating fluid to boil. Then try removing it.

Also, be careful not to catch anything on fire. LOL

Let me know.

Joe

Yes, that’s the part and yes it won’t come out of the mounting location. I have already tried carb cleaner and WD-40 multiple times and still nothing. I thought today about using a torch on it but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. Any other suggestions or advice would be great. Thanks!

P1345 refers to issues with the Camshaft to Crankshaft Position Correlation. The Engine Control Module (ECM) will trigger this code when it detects that the mechanical timing is incorrect. So, the VVT valve needs to be replaced. Can you get a pair of vise grips on it and use a large standard screwdriver to help remove it? Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem so we can see what's going on.

I did finally get it out with some persistence but now I can’t seem to get the serpentine belt back on even with the tensioner all the way. I’ve never had so many little problems working on a car. Here is a picture of the VVT that was in the car.

Yep, that is it, can you inspect the screen on the end of it? If clogged up clean it if clear replace the VVT. Also make sure the oil is clean and full. Let me know what happens. If you still have problems getting the belt back on, please start a new post for the issue.

Update: after changing VVT, started car, engine light was off, knocked slightly on startup but went away for a min then came right back like it was before changing the VVT. I’m guessing rod knock. Thanks for all the help and advice though, I appreciate it.

Hi,

Thank you for the update. Was the screen clean and was the engine oil clean and full?

Let us know. Also, you mentioned the knock. Where does the sound seem the loudest? Also, is there anything that changes it?

Let me know.

Joe

I didn’t really look at it, just replaced it with a new one but don’t recall seeing a screen on the end of it. The knocking seems to be coming from the top of the car under the engine cover. It gets quieter when the car is idling but comes back loudly when pressing on accelerator. Completely went away for a minute yesterday then came back.

If it comes from the top, chances are we still have a pressure issue. I wish I could hear it. Is it possible for you to record and upload it for me to hear?

Let me know. Also, if the engine has 230K on it, there is a chance that oil pressure is lower than expected.

Let us know.

Here’s 2 videos at idle and acceleration, from inside and outside of the car. If they’re not clear enough to hear the noise, let me know and I’ll try to get better ones. Thank you!

Hi,

I certainly was able to hear it. That doesn't sound like a VVT issue. It does sound like a rod. At this point, I would recommend removing the valve cover to see if there is any evidence of an issue.

To remove the valve cover, the intake first needs to be removed. Once that is off, it is a straightforward process. I attached the directions below.

Also, I am going to have Ken listen to this as well. Let's see what he feels could be the issue.

Take care and let me know what I can do to help.

Joe
