Power steering fluid

My 2003 mercury mountaineer calls for mercon atf for the power steering fluid. I put in gunk universal power steering fluid. There was still some old fluid in. Now there is a bass sounding grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel. Did I make a mistake? Will this cause damage? What should I do to fix it?
