2003 Ford Expedition Trouble code P0001

The Service Engine Soon light came on yesterday after my wife started the car. My code reader displayed P0001 Generic trouble code for a fuel pressure regulator open circuit.

I have read numerous entries on the Internet that all state that it is essentially a meaningless generic code and the manufacturer might have a different definition of it.

When I started the car it hesitated, and I could hear it misfire and then it ran fine. I cleared the code and the car has run fine today. Several weeks ago the car would not start after 2 attempts. On the third it started right up and ran fine. It turned over but would not fire as if it was not getting fuel. I could not find and codes.

The plugs and boots were changed 20,000 miles ago. The fuel filter has 16,000 miles on it. The IAC was replace 8,000 miles ago. I did remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator/damper and ran the motor for several minutes but did not find and odor of gasoline present. I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure.

Any ideas?

Fuel pressure may be low should be 50psi key on engine off. The p001 code si a variable valve timing solenoid, it could aslo be the pcm test between negative battery cable and vpwr pin for 10.5 volts if that is ok then see if solenoid is working. If it's not then have a mechanic look at it because it may have a short in harness or maybe a bad pcm. There are two different connectors one for a 104 pcm and the other for a 150 pin pcm both are pictured with where to probe.

Code P0001 stands for Fuel Volume Regulator Control Circuit Open. Although the repair information for your vehicle does not show that it supports this code, I do have helpful information on how to diagnose it.

Thanks for the additional reply. It turned out to be a bad fuel pump, which shorted out the fuel pump relay.
