I had a friend come tow me out of an icy patch and apparently he tied the rope to the axle(?) Now there is a black tarry substance leaking out and the car goes thump thump when I drive. What happened and how much will it cost to fix?

Sounds like you need a new axle. the axle itself can cost under $100 and labor is according to region/shop. here's example of axle. http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/parts/2002/toyota/highlander/cv_axle/cv_front_axle_shaft.html?3593=81642
