Costly transmission problem?

I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 with a 1.9L, 4 cyl, efi, ohc engine with almost 70k miles. Until recently, I have had absolutely no problems with the vehicle. The "service engine soon" light has started to stay on all the time. When I get to cruising speed at whatever the speed limit is, it feels like the car surges a little. It also feels like it's having trouble figuring out which gear to stay in. Sometimes it also wants to idle faster than it should. Does this sound like a costly transmission problem?

Lets start with you having the car scanned for codes you can go to a auto parts like auto zone and have them scan it for free. Let me know what the exact code numbers you have not the code descriptions the exact code numbers.I can tell you a lot after you get me the codes.

Saturntech9, I had the car scanned and the code showing is P1409. They recommended changing the gas cap, which seemed to make no difference. What's my next move?
