Can an exhaust manifold be repaired or does it need to be replaced

Car failed safety inspection due to leak in exhaust. Mechanic says crack is at the top but whole piece needs to be replaced. Cost $500 seems high. No lights indicating problem, car does rattle and slight gas smell.

Is there no way to patch or replace a single part? Is the price reasonable if not?
