I have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. My car was making a horrendous squeeking noise, and the Serpentine belt broke. However, we replaced it. The new belt was on tight and correct, but it completely shredded apart. What could possibly be wrong? Why would my car shred a new belt?

Before the next belt gets installed, turn each pulley, the alternator, the water pump, the power steering pump until you find the one that does not turn, that one will be the reason the new belt shredded. Also inspect all the drive surfaces for ANY damage and replace if any is found.
