Tensioner spring

L just replaced a timing belt and tensioner spring in 2002 kia rio and the spring will not slide freely to tighten up the belt?

Check the tensioner installation. It has to be seated correctly to allow the spring to retract it.

If tensioner spring is working correctly and you do not have sufficient tension, slowly turn the engine clockwise until compression is felt. Loosen the tensioner to allow the belt to readjust before retightening.
