steering became hard to turn no sign of belt loss engine did not over heat power steering fluid is ok. any ideas?

Yes! The power steering pump is possibly broken internally. remove the drive belt and pull outwards on the power steering pump pulley. It will probably come right out of the pump, seen it many times, replace pump and you are off to the races. Call (619)444-2290 for a price on a good used pump if thats the way you need to go.
