Have a 2001 saturn sl if I leave battery cable on it drains the battery. If I take it off the battery is fine. New battery, no lights left on. Could it be the starter? I started having starting problems about a week ago

I would first have the battery load tested to make sure it was good. Also have your alternator tested if it has a bad diode it could drain the battery.I highly doubt the starter is draining the battery. Let me know what you find.

It must have been the selenoid shorting out because I replaced the starter and everything works fine

I guess so because your solenoid only get's power to it when you turn the key to the start position. Glad you figured out your problem.
