2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT key stuck in ignition. Vehicle will start and shift every time but on occasion and more frequently now the key will turn the engine off but will not rotate far enough to let the key out. Wondering if there is a easy DIYer way of fixing this or if I should just use a screwdriver on the release under the steering column.

Thanks

Its stopping just short of the off position and will not rotate backwards any further. The run and start positions work just fine. I read a few things saying there was a solenoid in the steering column of some sort that might be responsible, any way of checking this?

I need to know if you have a floor shifter or a column shifter? If I know that I can see what system they use to keep the key from being turned off when it thinks it's in gear.
