It runs but has a noise and then it will not go.

It runs but has a noise and then it will not go at all even in the other gears. But when you off the van wait for 5 mins. When you start it again it will start to go again.

There may be a problem with the input shaft bearing. Also check the shifter cable linkage at shifter and transmission for loose connections and make sure the cable is utting gear fully into detent. You can feel the detent by had with cable loosened.
