I have a 2001 s10 2.2L and I've replaced the engine. When I start it up it sounds like a tractor. Don't think it is an exhaust leak I've checked that. Sounds like back pressure of some kind. Can you help?

Could the wrong exhaust manifold gasket cause this because that's where the air pump connects? I had to put the original exhaust manifold on the new engine and the gaskets are different.

it cold because you may have installed them backwards causing the problem. or the old manifold isn't designed for the newer engine. ws the newere engine the same as the one removed?

Yes, except I had to change the exhaust manifold because the new engine didn't have the air pump hook ups on the manifold. I was looking at the gasket that came off the old engine, and it has reliefs in the gasket for the air pump hook ups, the one I left on was flat.
