VW hesitating when accelerating

Getting on the freeway today in my 2000 VW Jetta, my car hesitated repeatedly as I accelerated, then my check engine light went on flashing. Once I reached cruising speed, the car stopped hesitating, and the CE light went solid. The CE light's been on since then, and the car does the hesitating thing every time I ask it to accelerate more than a little bit at a time (does it coming off of stop signs/lights, getting on the fwy, etc.) What is this, most likely? The car was just serviced last week and has about 111,000 miles on it.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

Seriously? You didn't want to suggest spark plugs or wires or even the distributor cap? Of course I'm going to probably end up taking it to a mechanic, but your only suggestion was to plug it into a computer? The field really has sunken to a new low, if an "expert" of whom I ask what a problem most likely might, be is telling me to "find out what's going on" as the "starting point" of the diagnosis. Good grief.
