I have just had a spark plug blow out causing damage to the bonnet and pushing out the spark plug wire. Is it possible it was just loose or likely to be as a result of another problem?

Probably was loose, but you will have to make sure that the thread is ok.

Chances are the plug was loose. Make sure the threads on the head are still in good condition.
