I have a 2000 mecury cougar. It has been broken down for some time now. I know it hasd something do with the alternator. It is not charging I finaly got the car to start up and took the battery terminal off and it shut off.A friend told me that some cars now if you take the terminal off they will shut off.I never heard that. Since it has been broken down I have replaced the alternator atleast 6 times and it keeps burning them up or messing them up some how.I am not sure how to explain it but I think the wires are wrong for the alternator so I was wondering where I could find a alternator wiring diagram I looked everywhere and come up with nothing. Can you help me please.I am riping my hair put not knowing what to do. Thank you so much for your time.

You should never remove the battery cable with the engine running as voltage spikes can destroy ECU's and other sensors, see pic for wiring system.
Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed. Mark (mhpautos)
