2000 Dodge Dakota high voltage gauge high

I turn the truck on and everything is fine as I'm driving the check gauges light comes on I look at my gauges and notice that my gauge is all the way on 18 I got home turn the car off turn the car on again and everything is fine, I turn the truck on and disco netted the alternator the truck stay on no problem I took it for a drive and it did it again do you think I need a battery or do I have a major problem on my hands

I need you to check something. First, using a volt gauge, check the voltage at the battery. Then, start the engine and check it. Let me know what you find. IF POSSIBLE, check voltage at the battery when the gauge is at 18. It sounds like you may have a bad voltage regulator. What makes it worse is the voltage regulator is part of the PCM (power control module). Not a cheap fix.
