My car idles in park at 1,500 to 2,000 then goes.

My car idles in park at 1,500 to 2,000 then goes to 1,200 when in drive also I can't get passed 40 mph and when I go from park to drive nothing happens and I hear a metal clashing noise I think the gears arnt grabbing sometimes as well anyone know what is going on

As far as the idle issue, I would suggest checking for vacuum leaks and checking the idle air control valve. The transmission is another issue. Is the sound coming from the transmission? If so, make sure the fluid is clean and full. If it is, it sounds like there may be internal damage that would require taking it apart and checking. Anything I would say would be a guess. NOTE: If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify trouble codes.
