1999 Ford Escort wagon, automatic, was running fine (except for disappointing gas mileage), then suddenly backfired and lost some power temporarily, then was OK the rest of the day.
The next day, it backfired when starting and had to be restarted, then died without excessive acceleration; now starts easily, but will not idle at all and dies instantly when
I let up on the gas pedal at all.
Service engine soon light comes on, but oil is newly changed and all other fluids are good.

Check engine light on
Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
