What causes a BRAKE and ABS light to come on?

My Brake and ABS light came on in my truck after not beig on the day before. What will cause this?

The most common cause is the sensor on the top of the rear differential. It is about a 20 dollar item. Check that first. If you have a scanner, scan the computer to confirm that it is that sensor.
