Trans safety failed

I have 1999 BMW 540I, was cruising on the Highway and heard a sound then dash light says" trans safety failed" anybody knows what that maybe.
anybody, somebody or everybody. Tx to all
if I pull over turn the engine off, restart car will run fine and do it again in about 1/2 miles or when reach certain speed.

Also if I do not stop turn engine off to clear 'trans safety failed code when I reach a stop sign then step on the gas the car feel very heavy take long time to move.

The transmission has encountered a fault and has gone into "Limp Mode" whereby it is locked in a single so you would not have any accelerating power. You need to get a scan done to retrieve the trouble codes and continue from there.
