Temperature gauge goes to 50%

The temperature gauge goes to 50% when you start the truck 1998 Tacoma and stays there. It seems to run fine. This started about a week ago. It used to start at cold and go to 50%. Is there a problem?

Yes the engine is cold. First thing in the morning it goes to 50%. Anytime you start it.

If you dont live in california most likely you can get it scanned for free at the auto parts store. Let me know what the exact code numbers are not code descriptions.

Yeah here in california they passed a law that auto parts stores cant read codes or loan out scan tools. You buy a cheap one amazon to just read codes for like 20 or they sell blue tooth one on ebay that works with smart phones thats like 20. Some of those can even read some liv data like what the coolant temp sensor is reading which would be handy.

There is aual-309 which does some live engine data there is also ms-300 which just does basic code reading.I dont know of any way to get free code reading in california.

Lets do this first before we scan for codes when its cold unplug the coolant temp sensor if the gauge reads dead cold you most likely have a bad coolant temp sensor.

Dosen't the engine light have to be on to do a check on that? My engibne light isn't on.

OK Where do I find the "the coolant temp sensor" to unplug. I assusme its in the engine somewhere? Please be detailed.
