Ignition timing

How do a fix the timing on a 98 Nissan Pathfinder, v6, 3.3L engine, belt is fine, distributor was removed w/o markings made prior to removal, I can see notches on pulley, but cannot see notch to line up, Haynes manual diagrams are confusing, car tries to turn over at start, but cannot quite fully start - please advise on hopefully an easy way for me to repair this issue - thanks! I was laid off from my job and cannot afford to seek a mechanic - any advice would greatly help.
