Ok let me try and explain this. I have a 98 Mitsubishi eclipse, New clutch, New master cylinder. When I go from 1st gear to second gear it doesn't catch, so I have to shift to third. Sometimes second gear works sometime s it doesn't, it's the same with 4th gear and reverse. If I am stopped with engine running with my foot off the clutch I can move the stick into 2nd, 4th and reverse, but not into 1st, 3rd and 5th. Can you please tell me where I should start to diagnose the problem. Oh and the check engine light came on shortly after this problem started.

Scan for codes for check engine problem. Your shift problem will be one of a couple of things its' either the shift cable is worn out or out of adjustment or an internal trans problem like synchronizer on one or whatever gear you are having a problem with pic shows how to adjust.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers

I decided to dig in there and check the shift linkage cables or whatever they are called and sure enough I found a clip sitting on top of the engine that fit right on the cable. The problem has gone away, but I think I need to replace part or all of the cable assembly. Thank you for the quick response
