When car is started, it sputters for a minute then finally idles normally

Then get a puff of smoke from the tailpipe after putting in gear.

We have changed the fuel filter and air filter. Plugs & wires are less than a year old. It does have some overheating problems when sitting at like a drive through or something.

When you first start, there may be some water in the cylinder causing a missfire and burns off.

Get a leak down test to verify there is no blown head gasket from overheating
