1998 ford expidition overdrive light flashing. What does this mean?

Indicates that the vehicle's computer has detected a fault in the transmission system and has put the transmission into safe mode, meaning the vehicle will only go a certain speed. This could be due to something internal of the transmission to a malfunctioning sensor. I suggest having diagnostic tests ran on the tranny to find the culprit.
