Anti theft problems

Just bought my son a 1998 Chevy Malibu. Anti theft system randomly turns on and you can't start the car for 10 min. The car did not come with the factory key but a copy. Could this be the problem? If I take the car to a lock smith and get a factory key recut will this fix it? If not. If we added a remote start system to it will that fix it?

You need a new factory key and it has to be programmed to work.

A remote start will not help as it would be cheaper to get a new key.

A locksmith can cut it provided he carries coded keys.
