1998 Chevrolet Cavalier think ECU bad

My car has been action crazy but only every other day or so for ten or fifteen nineties then will be totally fine again. What it dose is I will start losing power will go up and down and temp gauge seem to be moving w/ rpms. Brought to mechanic he said water pump and theorem are fine. He said he thinks it my be ecu. Dose this sound right please help me

Check battery for condition including load test auto parts does for free. A weak battery will cause this. Then scan for codes as well and check fuel pressure with a gauge. Autoparts rent those.
