1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Auto 4 speed with overdrive. Highway speed with no load coasting, overdrive will bump hard. Problem is inconsistent. Cannot tell if "bump" is overdrive related or engine electrical. Even after the hard bump has occurred, the jeep drives out just fine. It is just that split second of stutter that is annoying.

WHILE AT IDLE---SHAKE YOUR WIRING, MAINLY UP AND DOWN, AS IF IT WERE A BUMP

YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRES AS WELL, I HAVE FOUND MANY TIMES IN CRAMPED ENGINE COMPARTMENTS, THE PLUG WIRES RUB ON METAL CONSTANTLY AND ARCING WILL OCCUR, WHEN IT CHEWS INTO THE INSULATION. I USUALLY COVER WIRES WITH SPLIT LENGTHS OF FUEL OR VACUUM LINE, WHEN I REPLACE THE BAD WIRES, BUT ONLY IN THE RUBBING SPOTS. USUALLY THE LENGTHS I USE ARE NOT SHORTER THAN 4 INCHES. ZIP TIES MAY HELP TOO, BUT OVER TIME AND HEAT, THEY WILL BREAK.

MY BROTHER IN LAW REPLACED MY NIECE'S MUSTANG WIRES 3 TIMES BEFORE GIVING UP AND BRINGING IT TO ME. SHE HAD SEVERAL DEAD SKIPS, THE WORST BEING WHERE A PLUG WIRE WAS RUBBING THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THEIR PHILOSOPHY IS "DRIVE TILL IT WILL GO NO MORE"

MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING SIMPLE LIKE THAT
