Trying to put a 2000 Mazda bravo engine into a 96 ford courier the new engine has an electronic angle adjuster on the crank cam whereas my old one was all mechanical. Will this work without an onboard computer or am I asking for trouble?

Asking for trouble. Completely different control systems. Major undertaking.

That's a bummer. Apart from that engines are identical. Thought there may have been a way of bypassing the whole electrical thing.

No bypassing. Why dont you use the donor engine like you wanted but you have to change over everything from your to the donor. Lot more work but worth it,
