Speed Sensor Problem?

Lets start by you getting me the exact code numbers not code descriptions you have in the computer and we will go from there.Also do you have a multimeter?

Sat, Sounds like he's talking about a misfire at no.4 cyl-P0304

He said the car felt like it was in neutral no mention of miss fire and the speedometer was inop.I have never seen that car cause the speedometer to become inop.Iam going to wait and see what codes he say he actually has

Codes that came up were P0141 and P0441. I took the car out to check it again, and as far as position selectors park appears to work, reverse works, neutral works. Regardless if I have it in D S or L it will not shift out of first (L) and speedometer is inoperative.

Additional information there was no apparent misfiring, the engine was running smooth and continues to do so.

Do you have the 2.2L or the 3.1L engine?

Sorry, it's the 2.2L 4 cylinder.

The P0441 is evap system incorrect purge flow and the P0141 is HO2S heater circuit sensor 2.Both codes have nothing to do with the transmission or speedometer.Are you sure those are the only codes you have?Also are you sure nothing got damaged with your repairs?You went over all that work you did?

Also ae you sure the code reader you used reads transmission codes also?

The reader only showed the two codes I shared. The replacement of the gasket and filter was pretty straight forward. I drove the car after the repairs for several days with no visible leaks. So everything looked fine and seemed to operate well until last night.

Good question whether it reads the transmission codes as well. Let me check the manual and I'll get back to you.

Looking at the manual it shows a entire section of possible diagnostic trouble codes applicable to the transmission. I don't see anything in there that says any other settings on the reader itself have to be made to make it read transmission codes as well. You can see the unit I'm using manual at this address

Transmission Codes start on Page 30-33 and none of those are showing.

Yeah the two codes have nothing to do with the problems your having solet me know if that code readers will show us the transmission codes.

For some reason my last response didn't show up, maybe because their was a link it to a copy of the manual online. The reader also does read transmission codes. I don't see anything in the manual that says to change anything to make it read transmission codes so I can only assume it reads them automatically while reading any other codes. 3 pages in the manual are dedicated to possible transmission codes that you could encounter and none of them are showing on the reader.

I just read your instructions it doesnt say it reads transmission codes but lists them in the code descriptions so i really dont know if it does or not read transmission codes.If it does read them its strange that none are setting especially since your transmission doesnt shift and your speedometer is inop.

I though the same thing, the instructions aren't really that informative regarding what it does or doesn't do. I did send an email to the company's Tech Support asking for a specific YES or NO as far as this reader actually reading transmission codes.

Another thing, I'm assuming there's a harness that runs from sensors on the transmission to the transmission computer. IF that harness was disconnected would there be an error code show up signifying that? Or would the reader simply bypass any transmission codes because it wouldn't recognize transmission computer being present, and/or would the main computer recognize the absence of a transmission computer and spit out an error code stating that? The reason I'm asking is I bought this car used from a dealer about six months ago. It looks like the transaxle may or possibly may not be original. I noticed some writing on the housing that reminded me of numbered parts I've seen in salvage yards. ie like site specific code to identify parts.

If there was a transmission sensor unplugged and your code reader read transmission codes yes it would read the code.Try unpluging the speed sensor on the transmission and drive it see if it sets a code your code reader will read.

I returned the original reader and bought one the salesperson guaranteed will read transmission error codes. Disconnected the speed sensor,drove the car for about an hour and still no codes showing up for the transmission.

That should have set a code.

Problem Solved! First of all the location of the speed sensor given to me by the Parts Store was WRONG! It's located on the BACK of the transaxle on the opposite side of the car... Passenger side. Not the front of the car on the driver's side as the parts store told me. I couldn't find the location in my manual, but a post on the Haynes Manual message board steered me in the right direction. The sensor attaches to the top side of a unit that from the bottom of the car I could not see the top side. When I felt around for the wires going to the sensor, I noticed the top was loose, not only loose but missing a bolt leaving a gap of almost a half inch on one side. I removed the cap, and found the shaft located inside was not even it's correct position, the inside of the cap has a round guide that fits inside that end of the shaft. I got two replacement bolts of the correct size, made sure everything lined up so the cap slid on and sealed properly. Started the car and as soon as I moved forward the speedometer was working once again. A quick test drive shows the speedometer working and the car is shifting properly again.
