I have a 1995 firebird V6 with auto trans and 2nd gear start. When I first start car and put it in gear D it starts out in first, when it it shifst to second after hitting 35 it shifst a little hard and the check eng light comes on. Then it shifst fine through the other gears. When I come to a stop and then start again it takes off in second with out the 2nd gear button pushed and goes through the gears again. Now if I pull over and shut off car for aprox 5 min. Then start it up and go again it starts off in first again. Untill I stop and then go its back in second. Any one have idea? My trans fluid is nice and red and right at full. Could this be electrical and is there a way to disconnect 2nd gear start?

It's starting out in second because there is problem in the car somewhere. Have you had the battery and alternator tested? If not do that also what are the exact code numbers you have? That would be a good starting point let me know what you find.

If you have a 16 pin then your going to have to take it to a shop and have them read the codes for you that is your starting point. Since you said its starts shifting hard and the check engine light comes on. There is no way to stop the 2nd gear starts untill you fix the problem.

I wouldn't drive it like that unless you had to you could damage the transmission further.

Keeping it in 3rd even you don't know what is wrong with the transmission if you have a pressure issue etc you can still damage your transmission further. Let me know what you find.

Yes it did wine before I replaced it but now it wines a little different. It sounds kinda like the rear end is low on fluid. Its not I checked it. Like I said the trans shifts into od only when I let off gas. Its still the same. Does this mean the speedo itself is bad?

So no more 2nd gear starts?Hard shifting?Check engine light coming on?I wouldn't say the speedometer is bad especially when you had some speed sensor code.

No the trans still shifts just like before. Nothing has changed with a new speed sensor. Only a little different sounding wine.I thought changing the sensor would make the speedo work no such luck what else could it be?
