Why did the check engine light come on after the water pump was replaced?

What's the temp gauge reading, and did you check to see that the coolant was at the proper level? Let me know. After you run then cool then run a bunch of times and when you know the level is good, and the engine light is not off, pull the negative terminal on the battery for 2 min< turn the key on, turn the key off. Replace ground and fire it up. Let me know what happens.
