Transmission won't shift past 1st gear.

Original transmission did the same thing, but quit totally. Mechanic replaced with a used transmission, and now this one is not shifting past 1st gear. Not sure what to do. It is my only means of transportation, so I just drive 20 in 1st. I need help please! ;)

How's the transmission fluid level and condition? Have the computer scanned for codes-its in the fail safe mode

Rasmataz, the computer won't read it. And when the so-called mechanic put it in, he didn't change seals or filters in the used one and 5qts didn't register the next day, so we added 4 more. Still not to full level. Now it is just sitting. I haven't rechecked the level since the long drive in 1st manual.
The dipstick rusted and broke off also.

To me the transmission is defective-you can try having it pressure tested to find out more what's going on with it-
