Rattling from under the hood that seems to only occur around 2000 - 2500 RPM's

My truck is a 1994 Nissan pickup XE (D21) 4 cyl. 2.4L engine automatic transmission currently with 217,175 miles on it. It sounds like metal rattling/vibrating together. The noise is strictly related to rpm's from what I can tell. At first I thought it occurred when the truck changed gears, however this is not the case. Noise is not present below rpm range, and I can not detect it above the range. If I accelerate very gradually I can go through the gears without the rattling until I hit 55 - 60 MPH. At this point I am at the rpm range and the rattling will start and continue until I am out of the range. Have you ever heard of anything like this? What could be the cause and approximate repair cost?

So it doesn't do it in neutral/park?

Yes it will make the rattling noise in both park and neutral provided that I get the rpm's up to the 2000 - 2500 mark. Otherwise it will not make the noise. Sounds fine in idle as well.

Have you been under hood with a listening aid like auto stethescope or vacuum cleaner tube to try an isolate area of noise?

No I have not. I will give that a try and see if I can get any closer to the source of the rattling. Thank you.
