A/C kicking on by itself

I just noticed in the last few days a noise in my engine compartment that sounds like my A/C kicking in without me turning it on. When it kicks in, my rpm goes up a little higher which I would expect when idling. I pulled the electrical plug at the A/C compressor so it does not kick in. Anyone out there experience this and know what may be causing it?

Are you using the defrost mode? If so, the AC is supposed to run to remove humidity from the air so it doesn't condense on the cold windshield and cause fogging.

Thank you for your answer. I believe you may just be right, I think it was on defrost mode. Reminds me of Occam's Razor "the simplest answer is most often correct"
