Describe the noise. Does it occur when the car is standing still? Do you have to be moving? Can you hear the noise under the hood or under the car? Anything else that changes or affects the noise.

Has had a bit of a roar all along(about a year) always wondered what it ws but didn't seem to hurt the running of anything--- it just kept getting a little louder--sounds like from under the hood---gets louder when you open hood

That rules out a front wheel bearing which commonly causes a roaring noise when driving. If the noise is louder when you listen under the middle of the car, suspect a rusted muffler or a hole rusted in some other part of the exhaust system. If it's louder up front under the hood, a rusted emissions tube is more likely the cause. There should be a metal pipe, about 1" in diameter, threaded into the exhaust manifold. Those often rust out. Be careful when poking around looking for the source of the noise because those parts will be hot and the exhaust gas coming out of a leak will be hot too.

I think he meant INTAKE snorkel which is part of air intake before throttle plate and can be noisy if disconnected.
