After light driving of 10 minutes the temp gauge goes right to red. The second time it happened the check engine light came on. I checked the coolant, it seems to be full. Is this a sensor or what am I looking at here, thank you.

If the coolant is full and does not seem to be bubbling or pressurised, it most probably is a sensor fault. You would need diagostic tools to check for trouble codes to find what if the MIL turning on is related to this.
