1993 Geo Prizm shifting problems

It shifts from 1, 2, 5 great, when going into 3rd or 4th it will not engage and grinds out. If you are at a low enough RPM it will go into either gear but is a real struggle to get in there, could this be as simple as shift linkage? Or do you think it may need a whole new transmission

It needs a syncroniser in the trans. To replace it means total tear down. It may be more cost effective to look for a good used trans. Get a shop to check and confirm.
