I have an intermittent issue where the check engine light comes on randomly and the truck surges or slows down and the idle is super low/rough when stopped. The mechanic pulled the codes 14 (TPS) and 15 (Idle control motor). Does this indicate an issue with the ECM since it would be odd for both sensors to go out at once?

I can turn off the truck and restart it and usually the check engine light resets and the truck drives normally until some random occasion where the light comes on again and either the symptoms repeat or no symptoms accompany the check engine light.

Good afternoon,

The TPS tells the ECM the position of your foot. If it is reading wrong, it will also set the other code.

I would check the connector at the TPS first. I would also check the voltage with the key on. Verify there is 5 volts to the sensor.

Thanks. The throttle position sensor tests okay (local mechanic cleaned all six sensor grounds and tested the voltage). The check engine light came back on. I took the negative ground of the battery for ten minutes to clear the codes this afternoon and have driven about six miles without the light coming back. It's a very intermittent issue which is puzzling. Any other ideas?

If the repair was successful, the light goes out on its own. There is no need to remove the cable. That just tells me what he did was not the issue.

It will come back on.

I am curious about his voltage results. Did he give you details such as the sweep test?

Yes, I only reset the error codes when I disconnected the neg battery terminal. That is only to continue diagnosis when the light comes on again. The mechanic said the TPS had a clean arc and was returning appropriate voltage. I'm not inclined to second guess those results because he knows what he's doing in that regard (and charged me plenty to do it). If the TPS isn't testing bad, what's a good next step?

All this is pointing directly at the TPS.

Beyond the connector, we are back to the TPS.
