What could cause backfire upon acceleration. We just replaced the fly wheel. It was not backfiring but it would stall while driving.

Please include the engine size when talking about engine problems. Most common would be related to the crankshaft position sensor. Cracked core, metal particles on the end, wrong air gap, corroded connector terminals, etc. Also, if your crank sensor reads the notches in a ring around the flex plate or flywheel, be sure the new one has the same number of cutouts and the spacing is the same.
