I just had the timing belt and thermostat replaced on a 90 ford ranger. Now I have lifter noise and I'm using oil. Why is is the lifters knocking and I'm using oil now? It has a small leak in in the rear main but not enough of a leak to use 2 quarts in 200 miles. My tail pipe looks like it is black from the smoke.

if it has only done this since the belt replacement then take it back and have the person that installed it recheck their work. it may be a seal and even low oil pressure causing the lifter noise. Or the lifter was worn in the first place.
