1987 Ford Bronco steering wheel

I am replacing the steering wheel and switch.. Now when I am putting it back together and turn the key it pushes the two pieces of colum apart where the gear lever and the two collars come together and want crank.. I can hold them together and it cranks find. The crank rod to the switch inst broke.. Did I leave something out between the two collars.. That holds them in place or any ideals please...

Switch is not on colum..I put in new key switch.....and I have been having some transmission problems...does not want to take off in 1st gear..??

have a trans guy look at trans can be a valve body, clutch pak etc.
