1986 325 ES idle problem

My car hunts for an idle I have checked for a vacuum leak and cannot find one the engine light is always on but runs fine in gear but every time it idles the problem is ther occasionally the engine will not be on but it always hunts for an idle or if I adjust the idle speed it will idle high and won't hunt how would I diagnose the problem and fix it?

You have a vacuum leak from somewhere. A smoke test will find the leak.

We need the codes, bad move driving around with it on. It is trying to tell you something is wrong and I suggest you listen

Thank you how would I do a smoke test I apologize for not being a genius when it comes to cars I just entered the automotive world a few months ago and would like to be a mechanic someday but you gotta learn somewhere
