85 Supra fuel gauge/float?

Ok, so I have 1 more question for the Toyota "smart-boys" out there. What exactly is it that registers my fuel level in my car.I have a 1985 Toyota Supra, and I have looked all over the repair manual I purchased and cannot seem to find any mention of it, nor on the internet.(And I've searched!)Mine works, but since I have owned the car registers the fuel level lower than it is, and also registers really slowly; that part I'm not sure if is normal w/ the system or not, but someone told me shouldn't take that long at all. Is it a float? And if so, where exactly is it located and what's it called? If you know, I'll be very grateful!

Check and test your fuel sending unit this is the one that tells the fuel gauge what to do about fuel level
